Aha moment – it’s that little flash of understanding. It is simple, but maybe habit changing. It makes you feel a little smarter for knowing it, but you wonder why it took you so long to figure it out.
It happened to most of us – you tried to open a window soon after getting here and you thought it was going to fall on top of you!
Most German windows open two ways, from the top and from the side. Turn the handle all the way up, and it opens from the top. Turn the handle to the side and it opens from the side. Turn the handle down, while closed, and the window is locked in place.
A handy security tip: To avoid a crime of opportunity (the kind that could be easily prevented, like not leaving valuables on the seat of your unlocked car), open your windows from the top if you are not going to be around. If you have two windows next to each other, don’t leave one open and the other closed. It is too easy to reach in and open the other from the side. Instead, open both from the top.
