Miltary Ball Gowns

As the end of the year and ball season is approaching many of us are facing the fact that we need to buy a new ball gown. Online shopping becomes your friend during the stay in Germany but buying a dress online for the military ball might be tricky.

How many times have you bought something online and finally got the package to realize the material, color or the fit isn’t exactly what you were hoping for? Not to mention that getting the package might be a long process and end of the year is a busy time for the post offices everywhere.

Some posts have dress shops on post (e.g. Vilseck PXtra, Ramstein) but when you can’t find what you are looking for it’s time to put on your comfortable shoes, grab your camera and head to the closest big city.

It’s time to get ready for a fun day of shopping! Your best bet is to go to the closest big city.

Every big city has bridal shops that usually offer a selection of formal gowns. Be ready for high prices though and make sure to ask if they take VAT forms. (Smaller shops might not take them. If you are close to a base chances are they will, but if you are in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin it will really depend on the store and manager unfortunately.)

Stores you want to look in are Zara, Mango, H&M, Massimo Dutti, C&A and the department stores in the city center. Zara, Massimo Dutti and Mango are usually a bit pricier but the quality is usually better as well compared to H&M. C&A will have usually small selection of dresses.

If you find something in the store but you are not quite sure if you want to get it but don’t want to make the trip again make sure to check the websites (you can order to your german address). Mango has tons of “online only” items and is always worth checking out because they have formal dresses as low as 40 euros and go up to 159 euros…if you find a formal dress shop off post the gowns usually start around 250 euros and go up.

Online ordering is available for H&M, Zara and Mango. If you find something online and want to go try it on write down the name and article number (usually under the name) to make it easier for the sales person to find it. If they can’t find it they can always call the other store to see if they have it or take your phone number to call you when they restock. Zara gets 1-2 new deliveries a week, Mango once a week, C&A is a slower restocker.

Have fun shopping!
