Zwernitz Castle Exterior

Zwernitz Castle and Sanspareil

CONTRIBUTED BY MERIL CHICKINI

Last week, Meril wrote about Bayreuth. Check out her article here. This time she has some notes about a nearby castle and surrounding gardens.

Zwernitz Castle Exterior

I love how in Germany you can always find a castle or at least ruins no matter where you are. Only 30 minutes from Bayreyth in Wohnsees you can find a medieval castle first mentioned in 1156. The drive up to the castle is beautiful, but the view from the castle tower that stands 35 meters high is even better. Try to plan this trip for a day with clear sky so you can enjoy both the view from the tower but also walk around the Sanspareil (rock garden).

We got there pretty late before closing and the lady selling the tickets was very nice and helpful. If you have small kids then be ready to carry them because you can only take the stroller in to the “courtyard”. I’m not sure how busy it is during the high season but we felt completely safe leaving our double stroller there for the time we were exploring the castle.

You can explore the rooms and the permanent exhibition “Hunting in the Time of the Margraves”. I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed when walking around inside. I guess I was hoping to see more set up rooms. Instead, there was one room about the castle history, a couple of rooms filled with hunting trophies, and a room of weapon with few pieces of beautiful furniture.

I think the coolest part about this castle is that you can go up to the tower. Be careful because the steps are steep and make sure to be dressed warmly because it’s super windy up there. Overall our family liked it and it was definitely something we will remember.
