Thanks to the Korean Tourism Organization’s welcome event for the 2014 K-Performance Supporters (which I was lucky enough to stumble upon during their enrollment process), I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a rare night out at the theater and got to see KABOOM!

KABOOM! is a variety show, directed by Kolleen Park, with four different acts:

  • Morning of Owl – a B-Boy dance group (“World’s number 1 B-boy team”)
  • Magic Trunk – a magician and his assistant, who incorporate story telling into the show
  • Va Va Voom – a female trio that plays fusion Korean classical music on traditional instruments (including the gayageum, daejaeng, and janggu)
  • PID (Performance in the Darkness) – a black laser light show with costumed dancers

As with most live shows, taking pictures during the performance is a big no-no, but there are some good photos of each act on the show’s website.

Kaboom! is an apt name for the show – there was thrilling music, great lighting and special effects, and very energetic performances by all four acts. The magic tricks were very theatrical and the B-Boy dancers offered up both fast and slow pieces. Va Va Voom incorporated instrumental and vocal music into their performances, and they collaborated with the other acts at times. The highlight for all in the audience was the final sequence by PID, with their thrilling laser show and dance moves.

This is a great show and you will definitely enjoy yourself. The music and effects are loud at times, so the mommy in me would probably not bring my pre-schooler to it, but I did see a number of older, school age kids in the audience enjoying the show. One cool audience participation element is that the pictures you take on the Kaboom! kiosks in the theater’s lobby (and e-mail to yourself) are included in the opening video sequence – be sure to say “Kimchi” with a big smile for your close up!

Christine, this show looks like so much fun! Thanks for sharing! So, I’m really interested in this K-performance supporter thing. What’s it all about?

Also, for people interested in getting tix online, the Interpark site mentioned above is easy to navigate. I got some to see Jump and it was really easy process.

The K-Supporters is a group of non-Koreans that got picked in January by the Korea Tourism Organization to write posts and reviews of events in Korea, in exchange for tickets, etc.. I’ve only been to the welcome event so far, but am going to a concert this Saturday and we’ll see how it goes. It really was a case of me stumbling across the recruitment info while I was surfing the net for Korean info shortly after we PSC’d in. When they recruit again, I will be sure to post info on FB for the KoreaYe crowd, as well as info about any upcoming events/festivals they tell me about.
