When we explore a new area, I usually try to have one activity/restaurant/event planned for us. The rest of the day we just explore and discover along the way.
Recently we came across a little café in Itaewon called Sweet East. While I love a good apple pie, funnel cakes are one of my absolute favorite desserts so I was extra excited about this place. I thought my days of enjoying a festival style funnel cake were over for a few years. But I was wrong. They serve… you guessed it: funnel cakes!
Sweet East doesn’t just serve your normal, boring fried pancake batter. They have created a menu of specialty funnel cakes that combines this well-loved festival food with of your other favorite sweet-tooth cures. You can choose from Cookies n’ Cream, Chocolate Banana, Strawberry, or Caramel Apple. If you are feeling particularly nostalgic, they have the Carnival Classic as well.
The lady working the register was very sweet and spoke good English as well. The funnel cakes come in regular (7,500-9,500 KRW) and small sizes (5,000-6,500 KRW), and they also have a pretty impressive drink menu.
We ordered a regular size Carnival Classic to share and my husband also got a piece of carrot cake from their dessert case. He also ordered a Pumpkin Spice Latte (6,000 KRW) and I tried a White Chocolate Mocha (5,000 KRW) and we found a table to sit and wait while they made everything fresh.
Our children could hardly contain their excitement.
The whole café was just adorable. It had a very clean, modern vibe; also very inviting at the same time. I also thought the bathroom was super cool and different so I had to take a photo. The restrooms are behind a big, wooden sliding barn door. On the inside, it is all stone (almost like stained cement).
Almost all the tables were full when we were there (a good sign!) and they brought us our order within 10 minutes. They also brought small glasses of water for our boys for free.
I couldn’t snap a photo fast enough before my munchkins dug in. That’s understandable though, it was SO good! It tasted just like it came from the food truck at my county fair back home! Sweet East did, however, add a few extra touches. The little red and black bowls are whipped cream and vanilla ice cream for topping or dipping… perfect! My husband and I also enjoyed our coffees. We agreed they tasted a little “different”; not bad, just different.
All in all, I definitely recommend a visit to Sweet East Dessert Café if you are in the Itaweon area. Great service, good prices and yummy food.

If you are looking at the Itaewon archway, go to the right side of the road and walk toward Suji’s deli. Keep going past Suji’s (on your left) and turn left into the first alleyway.
Keep walking down the alley until you find Sweet East on your right (refer to first photo).
