If you are looking for a quick day trip from the Kaiserslautern area, the Völklinger Ironworks may be the perfect spot. Not only can you tour the Ironworks site, but they typically have a special exhibit being showcased in the Blower Hall.
When our family went to the Ironworks a few weeks ago, they were hosting an Egyptian exhibition. The Egyptian exhibition will be open until April 12th and featured artifact and information from different periods of Egyptian history. The items are on loan while the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is being renovated.
When you first enter the Egyptian experience, there are models of buildings that have had major impacts throughout history. Then you can enter a room displaying important writings. The exhibit features a 15 minute movie played in various languages and most impressively the artifacts wing. They have jewelry, pottery, tools, statues and sarcophaguses to view. Each item has an information sheet posted and is written in German and English. Unfortunately we were not able to take any pictures inside the Egyptian exhibit.
It took about an hour and a half to walk through and then we enjoyed a few hours walking through the rest of the Ironworks factory. The factory museum gives you a glimpse into history when the factory was thriving and in operation. It has maintained to have its rustic, older feeling but it is very clean, easy to navigate through and well kept.
There is information posted throughout the tour to explain how the machinery worked and what life was like working there. The paths are very clearly marked to guide you through the tour but you can go at your own leisure pace. There are areas that you could bring a picnic lunch to enjoy when the weather is warmer and things are a little greener.
You can also climb up to the viewing platform to see a 360° panoramic view. Unfortunately the day we were there it started to rain a little too much when we were nearing the platform.
The Ironworks factory is a UNESCO sites on the list of places I will return back to when we have family in town.
