Waking up mid-morning after a heavy night’s drinking, a group of friends and I found ourselves roaming the streets of Hongdae in search of some good ol’ fashioned comfort food. And boy did we find it! The Beastro has become an institution in recent years for serving proper American soul food, full of flavor and with no expense spared.
Amongst our group we shared the smoked salmon benedict, fried chicken platter, chimmichurri fries, and apple pie with chestnut ice cream.
First, the salmon (15,000 won). Melt in your mouth smoked salmon on a crumbly biscuit, topped with perfectly cooked poached eggs. Absolute winner. It came with a side salad and really was the perfect choice for an indulgent brunch dish.
The chimmichurri fries were thin, crisp and smothered in chimmichurri sauce, herbs and Parmesan (8000 won). Delicious.
But the dish we were all really fighting over was the fried chicken platter (17,000 won). I would say this is one of the best chicken dishes I’ve ever eaten. And trust me – I’ve eaten quite a few. The most tender and juicy fried chicken breast came with velvety mashed potato and a southern biscuit. But what really made the dish stand out were the incredible sauces and garnish served alongside. The tart yet sweet honey sauce and the garlicky bagna cauda were the perfect duo whilst the sweet onions and mustard seeds added yet another flavor dimension.
To finish it off we tucked into a delicious apple pie with chestnut ice-cream (12,000 won). Made to order, you have to wait 10-15 minutes for the pie to be cooked but after one bite you’d happily wait another 15 minutes over!
We were only here for brunch (served weekends only) so cannot comment on the dinner menu except to say that if they do dinner half as good as they do brunch, you’ll have no complaints. If money didn’t matter and calories didn’t count, I’d be eating here day in and day out until I leave the peninsula!
