Seomun Market, Daegu (Part 1)

Seomun Market-001

I suppose I left Seomun Market last on my Daegu bucket list because it is Daegu’s largest market and a great place to buy gifts. It’s also one of the three main historical markets established in Korea in the Joseon Dynasty, which spanned approximately five centuries until the Japanese invaded in the early 1900s. As you’ve probably noticed, the most reasonably priced items, quirky finds, hand-made goods and food are all located at markets. Each medium-sized neighborhood has a market where you can find items ranging from street snacks to pots to dresses. Seomun market is a great place to buy specialty items such as silk, ceramics or traditional Korean sauces or elixirs.

Seomun Market

Seomun Market, located in proximity to downtown Daegu, has almost every souvenir that you’d want to buy from Korea. Even if you have nothing to buy, you’ll probably leave with a satisfied belly or at least one item. It’s also a great place to people-watch. I watched a Korean woman handle the grey and unusually long intestines of a pig that I later researched would be served as a dish called Sundae.

Seomun Market-002

Usually, ‘Sundae’ refers to a refreshingly sweet ice-cream sundae topped off with whipped cream, nuts, chocolate syrup and a maraschino cherry. Well, Sundae in Korea is quite the opposite. Sundae is a popular Korean dish that consists of boiled or steamed pig intestines stuffed with various seasonings, blood and glass noodles. It’s also referred to as blood sausage. I bet that description left your taste buds squirming in excitement.
