I’ve noticed a trend over the last few years that I’m trying to stop. It seems that just before I move away from a town or region, I learn about a local culinary gem that I could have been enjoying the entire time that I lived in an area. I then try to fit in a year or more worth of visits within a few months or weeks and am always sad to realize that it just can’t be done. I want to avoid that trend starting now. My first step towards this goal was a visit to Café Konditorei Goldinger in the heart of Landstuhl.
For over forty years, the family establishment has been operated by Pastry Chef Ludwig Goldinger and his wife as well as their son, who is also a pastry chef. The Goldinger family has succeeded in cultivating memorable culinary experiences as well as a welcoming hotel that invites visitors to take advantage of everything the area has to offer. As proof of their achievements, the magazine Der Feinschmecker listed Café Konditorei Goldinger as one of the 450 best cafes in Germany. How can I pass up a visit, and probably many more, to one of the best cafes in Germany that also happens to be right down the road from my new home?
The café is conveniently located in downtown Landstuhl across the square from the Stadthalle (city hall and performance space) and its ample parking lot. Visitors can enter through the bakery section and see the impressive cake buffet. Each pastry is so beautifully prepared that the hardest part of your visit will be selecting the treat that you want to try most. Luckily, the wait staff is happy to package the expertly crafted chocolates, cakes, and pastries in ribbon-tied boxes so you can take home a little taste of everything. Party trays featuring sweet and savory dishes can also be ordered.
The café’s menu changes weekly and features a different special each day. All items on the menu are described in German and English. The week I visited, dishes such as dumplings with chanterelles in cream sauce and Palatine bean soup were available. Visitors can also opt for the full breakfast or lunch buffets.
The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of breads and meats. If you enjoy spreads with your breakfast breads, eating from the buffet may prove to be a more cost efficient choice since condiments are a la carte items when ordering off the menu. I opted for an omelet off the menu prepared with ham and Swiss cheese. Everything was prepared fresh to order, and the server was careful to ask exactly how the diners preferred their dishes. I also had some of the richest hot chocolate that I have ever tasted. The hot chocolate ensured a future visit if the challenge of tasting everything in the cake display wasn’t motivation enough.
Menu items are available throughout the day, but the breakfast buffet switches to lunch around 11:00. The menu offers everything from full breakfasts featuring hot drinks, rolls or toast, eggs, salami, cheese, and smoked or boiled ham to light sandwiches or toast topped with things like asparagus and a decadent, melted cheese topping. There is an extensive beverage list available that includes exotic tea options like Assam Broken and several coffee varieties. Families with young children can also feel welcome at the café. There is a children’s menu that features things like pizza and ice cream as well as a play area with a swing set in the outdoor seating section.
The café is open daily except for Tuesdays from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and it is good to know in advance that only cash is accepted. The weekly menu can be found at www.hotel-goldinger.de. The website offers an English option on the homepage. The website also provides a link to the café’s Facebook page where dinners can keep up to date on current offerings and a place to sign up for a weekly bulletin. I think I’ll be signing up for the bulletin. Then, I’ll be sure to remember to visit the café regularly instead of trying to squeeze all my visits in at the last minute.
