Koblenz was our first Christmas market this year. We loved the markets last year and have been looking forward to them since then. Koblenz was the perfect way to start.
The market is spread over six places in the old part (Altstadt) of Koblenz: Münzplatz, Plan, Rathausplatz, Liebfrauenkirche, Jesuitenplatz, and Zentralplatz. Once we found one of the areas we were able to easily follow the crowds, red star lanterns and inviting smells from area to area.
Even though we hadn’t visited this market before, it felt familiar and we quickly found our Christmas market favorites. First up was Glüwein. We went with the traditional rot (red) for our first cup of the season. This year’s cup features the little boy from the Schaengelbrunnen, fountain in the Rathaus courtyard.
Our second favorite was a Brat and Brötchen, the simple sausage in crusty bread with some mustard was piping hot and delicious! With our bellies content, we wandered around and looked at all the other vendor’s stands.
There were small rides for children, ice skating, stands with gifts for everyone, food, food and more food. There was also a multi-story Christmas pyramid drink stand as well as something I hadn’t seen before: A Christmas windmill drink stand!
For those of you that have been here for a holiday season or two, or those of you who are enjoying your first season of Christmas markets, be sure to check out the market in Koblenz. It has all of the favorites without being overwhelming. I think you’ll like it!
