Kassel hosts Germany’s Märchenweihnachtsmarkt (“Fairy Tale Christmas Market”). Each year, one of the Brothers Grimms’ stories is featured. This year (2014) highlights Sleeping Beauty. Around the market, you’ll find displays depicting many of the Grimms’ fairy tale characters, as well as shows featuring the theme fairy tale. For me personally, the long department store Steiff window display was the best part of Christmas in Kassel. Window after window featured a giant animal circus scene. It really combined the wonder of Christmas and nostalgia. Rides for the little ones included a merry-go-round and similiar rides. There was a huge ferris wheel; given the beautiful views, it was worth the wait in line. I found the vendors to be like most: wooden handcrafted Christmas decorations and toys, scarves, soaps, food and Glühwein, etc. Nothing distinct jumped out at me. The city is large and the Weihnachtsmarkt is not concentrated in just one square, so grab a map as soon as you get there. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, so expect to spend some time looking for a spot. You can find a map of available parking lots here.
