Landstuhl’s Schloβcafé:  Eating Our Way Across Germany One Restaurant at a Time

CONTRIBUTED BY HEATHER LIDOWSKI

Schloβcafé Landstuhl, Germany | www.germanyja.comMy husband really likes to eat.  Each time we move, finding the best places to eat in our new hometown, whether they are fine dining establishments or roadside stands, ranks pretty high on his to-do list.  So, I wasn’t surprised when he started asking everyone we met when we arrived in Germany (including the guys who unloaded our moving truck) where they liked to eat.  When a German tour guide identified Schloβcafé as a restaurant she enjoyed going to with her husband, I knew it was only a matter of time before we made our reservations.

The Schloβcafé is part of the Schloss Hotel Landstuhl.  Located just below Burg Nanstein, the restaurant and hotel are situated in a nook encircled by huge trees that make you feel like you have escaped into a forest.  In reality, you are a short hike from the castle and the heart of Landstuhl.  The hotel offers guest rooms, a fitness and sauna area, conference rooms, and facilities for large events such as weddings.  The restaurant is open to hotel guests and the public at large.  We went to the restaurant for lunch on a weekday and found several other people there on lunch breaks or out with friends.  The dining room boasts windows that provide a panoramic view of the lovely landscape, which set the scene for a lovely lunch.

Schloβcafé Landstuhl, Germany | www.germanyja.comUpon entering the restaurant, you can’t miss the fantastic looking salad bar.  There were trays and bowls full of pickled or grilled vegetables, fresh greens, and anything you could ever think of to use as a salad topping.  My husband picked the daily special, which included a trip to the salad bar.  He came back to the table with a plate piled high with a salad that looked so enticing that I probably could have ordered a single trip to the salad bar and left the restaurant satisfied.  I’ll have to remember that the next time we visit Schloβcafé.

Schloβcafé Landstuhl, Germany | www.germanyja.comI opted to order the Norwegian Salmon from the menu.  It had a lovely sesame seed crust and sat on a bed of sautéed vegetables in an Asian inspired sauce.  When I go out to eat, I like to order things I couldn’t easily make at home.  I couldn’t have made any of the dishes we sampled at home easily, which makes me want to return to the restaurant and try more of the menu options.

Schloβcafé Landstuhl, Germany | www.germanyja.comIn this instance, my husband’s constant search for restaurant recommendations paid off.  We enjoyed a lovely lunch in a lovely setting, and we are sure to return to Schloβcafé.  If you would like to give Schloβcafé a try, it is located at Burgweg 10, 66849 Landstuhl.  The restaurant is open daily from 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM.  Reservations aren’t required, but they can be requested by calling +49 (0) 6371-9214-0.  Menus and additional information about the hotel can be found at www.schlosshotel-landstuhl.de.
