Eton House Lodge Preschool, Seoul

CONTRIBUTED BY REBECCA WOODS

The Eton House schools have several locations in the Seoul (and K16 & Osan) areas (Hannam, Bundang, and Dongtan), which cater to children from Pre-K to Grade 8. Their newest addition is “The Lodge,” which opened in fall of 2015 and is specifically designed for pre-school age children. The building is located directly behind the Grand Hyatt Seoul and is about a 5-10 minute drive from USAG Yongsan depending on which gate you exit.

Classes are taught in English and students come from all nationalities. The curriculum follows the UK’s early years foundation stage framework, which encourages hands-on and play-based learning.

The building is designed with lots of open space, bright light and natural materials. There are three floors of classrooms, a music and cafeteria area and a rooftop space with a sand pit, water and garden area. The children also take outdoor walks in nice weather to Namsan Park, which is directly across the street from the school.

Parent Take:

I absolutely love this school for my son. The staff and other parents of the school have been so warm, welcoming and open that they feel like a second family, which is really important when we are far from “home.” From the cleaning staff to the parking attendants to the principal and teachers – everyone is always smiling and upbeat, creating a happy school environment for the children. The teachers have really gotten to know my child, care for him and have helped him begin develop his character and confidence.

His behavior at home has improved in leaps and bounds since the start of the term. I love hearing him talk about the creative projects he works on at school or singing songs he has learned in music class. Their emphasis on play-based learning and individualized attention has made my child enjoy school and the learning process. The school building is well designed and beautiful — the views of Namsan and Seoul Tower are amazing. Many days I wish I could go to school there myself!

Parent involvement in school is highly encouraged. Teachers communicate through a communication book, email and other online forums to share information about the children’s days. Parent-teacher conferences are held periodically and the school often hosts events for parents to come into the school and be involved such as Children’s Day, International Day, music concerts and other gatherings.

Children wear uniforms of which the first set is provided with registration fee and additional items can be purchased through the school. Snacks and lunch are provided with offerings of both international and traditional Korean foods. Transportation is available for children over 3 years at an additional cost.

Tuition ranges based on grade level. Standard tuition is pricey but they do offer a military, sibling and multiple birth family discounts.

For all you parents looking for a preschool that suits your kids, we’re hoping to add a little something to aid in your search. Parents of children who attend various preschools here in Korea have filled out a series of questions about the schools for the benefit of the rest of us. We welcome more than one voice on each school since everyone has a different experience, so please feel free to add in your two cents in the comments.
